True Tongkat Ali: wild-harvested Yellow Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) roots, cleanly sliced and sun-dried by our family in Ipoh, Perak, for brewing like an herbal tea. This is the plant scientists mean when they write “Tongkat Ali”. Traditionally it has been given to both men and women for back pain, stiff joints, aching knees and general body weakness. It is intensely bitter, and that bitterness is how you know it is the real root. It is a different plant from Red Tongkat Ali (Jackiopsis ornata), which has a different traditional role.
- Ingredient: 100% Yellow Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) root, nothing added
- Net weight: 200g
- Packing: Food-safe packaging
- Raw root, not an extract: there is no extract ratio to read, so no “200:1” claims
How to prepare
Tea
- Take about a quarter of one root slice.
- Place it in a cup of freshly boiled water.
- Let it steep for 10 minutes. The water turns yellow with a bitter herbal aroma.
- If you like, add a teaspoon of raw honey or have it with a few dried dates to soften the bitterness.
- Sip slowly.
Decoction (stronger)
Use about 5g of dried root per litre of water. Simmer for 15–30 minutes, then strain. It will be dark and bitter. Keep the rest in the fridge. Start with a quarter cup and build up gradually over several days.
How long to take it: start low, and do not take it non-stop. Four to six weeks on, then one to two weeks off. The traditional rotation is one to two months of Red Tongkat Ali, followed by one to three months of Yellow.
Storage
Keep in a cool, dry place in an airtight container.
Good to know
- The brew is naturally bitter. That is normal for this plant.
- Yellow is the best-researched of the three Tongkat Ali plants. Research suggests its compounds bind to SHBG, freeing testosterone the body already has rather than making more, and a 2013 study found lower cortisol alongside higher free testosterone after four weeks of supplementation. The bone research is promising, but much of it is in animals and human trials are still limited. Most of the research uses extracts, not raw root slices.
- These roots are wild-harvested, so we cannot issue a Certificate of Origin.
- Avoid if pregnant or breastfeeding. If you take medication or hormone therapy, or are managing a health condition, speak to a qualified professional first.
- This is a plain dried herb, not medical advice.
